Even though there are three games left in the NFL regular season, fantasy leagues playoffs will have already begun or will begin this Thursday. The regular fantasy season is much like the fantasy playoffs, but there are a few minor things a fantasy owner must be aware of. There are also a set of guidelines to determine who enters the fantasy playoffs that are different from the NFL’s method of determining who gets into the playoffs.

Fantasy playoffs usually involve 4-8 of the highest ranking teams in the league. Fantasy teams are ranked by the highest of wins and if any teams have tieing win-loss records their playoff placing will be determined by the amount of fantasy points earned by a team. As shown on the ESPN website, leagues can use different methods to pick which teams will enter the playoff race and various playoff schedules used in different league styles.

Moreover, during the playoffs once the team loses once they are out. The playoffs schedule is decided by the ranking of the team. For instance, the first rank team plays the last rank team to enter the playoffs. Depending on the league, it’s usually the 4th, 6th, or 8th rank team. The second ranked team plays the second to last ranked team and so on and so forth. Therefore, having a better regular season record will benefit the fantasy owner because they play the poorer teams in the league. Further adjustments in the individuals’ team can also result from extenuating factors.

Although, the point system is the same in playoffs as in the regular season there are few things to look out for during this late season play. NFL teams that have already guaranteed a slot in the real NFL playoffs will sometimes not start or limit the playing time of some of their star players. For instance, a team like the Saints from New Orland’s who will most likely have a guaranteed high spot in the playoffs will not risk starting their start quarterback for fear that they could get injure during the game that has no importance or influence on their season’s future. Therefore, it is important to research which teams have a guaranteed playoff spot and whether any of your starters will be affected by benching in order to save then for the real NFL playoffs. But be aware some teams such as the Saints and the Colts may start their stars in pursuit of a perfect regular season record.

Overall, the playoffs is the most important part for fantasy football owners because it is what determines the winner. During this time owners have to keep their eyes open because there are different ways to pick up teams for the playoffs. Moreover, owners must know how the schedule is set up in their league and also what things to look up for in fantasy team management during the later season.
